I figured if it's happening to me, how many others have tried to sign up but don't have the patience or persistence to keep trying.

The other option is to attach your new PC with the weak account key. https://escatter11.fullerton.edu/nfs/weak_auth.php

Is it still happening? I just tried attaching to the project with my existing account on my Macbook and it worked fine.

I just tried again this morning with my wife's new HP laptop to attach BOINC to NFS@Home, and the project still states that is temporarily unavailable, please try again later.

I just downloaded and installed the latest BOINC client on my wife's Windows 10 computer, and successfully connected it to NFS@Home. From this end, everything seems to be working.

Is there perhaps a firewall on the laptop preventing BOINC from communicating with the server? Is anyone else seeing this error?

I uninstalled BOINC and the Webroot security program this morning, and I added boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe to the Windows firewall allowed programs. Then without Webroot or any other security program running, I reinstalled BOINC and tried to attach to NFS@Home. BOINC communicates with the project since I get the communication box, but then it's "project temporarily unavailable, please try again later." I'll do more research to see if I can get it to work. My wife's old laptop did 10k work units a day so I'd like to get that back.

Google for "boinc project temporarily unavailable, please try again later", I can see some folks with the same issues in the past on other boinc projects.

Today I noticed that a friend has a newish HP laptop and has never installed BOINC. I borrowed it briefly, downloaded and installed BOINC, and attached to NFS@Home without problems. At this point I'm at a loss what the issue is.

Further update: I installed the previous version of BOINC, 7.12.1. Still doesn't work.

After a fresh install of the latest version (7.14.2), I noticed that at the bottom of the BOINC screen it says "Connecting to localhost" rather than "Connected to (7.14.2)" on my other Windows pc's. After trying to attach to NFS@Home and getting the temporarily unavailable message, BOINC then says "Disconnected."

So I'm trying to debug this problem.

I just upgraded the server to the latest version 1.2.0. See if that makes any difference.
