Don't think you can include Marx in that category. Overall, the Western world seems to be moving more in his direction than the opposite. Just not very quickly overall: seems to be a pattern of stagnation, followed by a leap forward (sometimes triggered by major disruptions such as World Wars or economic failures/crises) subsquently followed by another stagnation as the consequences of the prior leap are processed and incorporated.

Including Marx is just the point of the picture.

Anyway Marx succeeded in many things : excluding the anarchists from the IWA (the first International), liquidating the IWA, promoting social democracy and publishing, he can't compete with the other three characters.

This is not in "western worlds" only. This is all around the globe. The technological progress makes it easier for people to see and know faster and more accurate what other people are doing. Not only neighbors, but people on the other side of the planet. A new type of "collective conscience" is being born. We are all cells of a big body, and we are just beginning to group together, like some paramecium did billions of years ago.
Read the last paragraphs of this old post of mine... (had to look for it) (edit: the discussion that follows there, is also interesting!)

I think the progression is a necessary outcome of the free sharing of information and knowledge. In the words, "the more you know, the better you are at making decisions".

But two things counter this (and probably more) First, you have governments that restrict/control the free flow of information across international borders. We can all name a few countries that do it. Second, you have individuals who have the access, but are afraid that it will challenge their faith. I think it is clear that (in general) as people gain more knowledge they move further away from religious dogma.

I think the key to eduction is to guide people to understanding the information that is out there and being able to distinguish what is factual from everything else.
