I believe that "the user" is enough intelligent to know what he wants to waste his cycles for. Why do you all try to underestimate his intelligence? The message "hey man, this job will take half your life, and your chances to succeed is almost zero" (as P95 already giving - not word by word, but you got the idea), is plenty enough. The user must be advised in case he doesn't know what cart he puts his horses to, but forcing him to pull the cart that you chose, is wrong. If you won't let me do the work I want to do (for fan, for fame, for money, for whatever reasons I may have), then I would take my horses and go away. Of course, you have to educate me, to make me understand that this job is more necessary, is better to do, etc., than that job, and why. You have to make me understand that doing 100M LL test with a 80486 processor, or doing SIQS for a C140 with yafu, hehe, may be an idiotic thing, but at the end, let ME choose what I want to do. Let me be idiot, but a free one. If you start setting barriers, you will lose half of the horses...

I don't see anyone here advocating that the user is forced away from work. Indeed, it appears to me that all the suggestions are to give a warning if some as-yet-undetermined expected completion time is exceeded. Where is it suggested that the user is completely blocked?

Yes, we all know that it'll take a long time and be somewhat of a "waste" of cycles. On the other hand, not many realize that it is almost guaranteed to be a true waste (read: incorrect) without the ECC memory. (To be fair, no one has proven that these first two 100M results are wrong.)

It would be completely irrational to make such a suggestion. No one would dare to say that, or even to hint to it. But every dictatorship starts with building the repression force, maybe giving small favors to the people in this time so they won't see it :D, and you were the one who started to "limit" the liberties, like to "discourage" the tasks longer then n weeks, etc. I understand the good intentions, but how about letting things as they are? The P95's warning is enough, for who wants to read. CudaLucas shows ETA times. If I want to waste my 2-3 years of electricity bills, can you stop me? We ALL will reach that eventually, as the LL and DC fronts raise.

I don't think so, and here's why: the chances that the test will even be valid with non-ECC memory are very low, but Prime95 doesn't let you know that.
Prime95 only lets you know, like any shorter reservation, the time it'll take and the chances, assuming it's valid, that it'll be prime.

Well I am not using ECC for my 100M test because ECC is expensive and the processors which can use ECC are more expensive and slower (and don't use AVX) then the fastest processors on the market AND you will not be sure that you have reached an accurate result.

What I suggest is to run a LL and a D simultaneously on two different machines saving intermediary files every 20M and comparing intermediary residues every 20M. It would be cheaper and more accurate. If/when you have a mismatch you need to go back to the last intermediary file.

This has been discussed before.

Question hrf3.txt / hrf3.zip

I think it would be interesting to see if I can extend this list backwards and I think that may be possible if someone has saved the old hrf3.txt (hrf3.zip) files so if anyone have them it would be nice if you could upload them here or send them to me by email: atr@hig.se
