Finally got a round tuit and processed Tom's images of the M81 group of galaxies in Ursa Major, the nearest galaxies not in the local group. I'm impressed. Not only are the NGC galaxies easily visible, there is even a trace of UGC 5302, which is catalogued at 15.1 magnitude!
Compare the attached image with the corresponding view in Aladin. The attached image is the stacking of 17 of Tom's images which is then histogram equalized and an arrow drawn in with GIMP which points at the galaxy Stellar images are trailed to about 7 pixels long. The indicated region is noticeably brighter than the background and the elongated image of the foreground star is easily visible. That star is merged with the galaxy, on the opposite side of the arrow and tucked into the northwest corner of the cursor in the Aladin image. As far as I can make out, the star is NOMAD-1 1583-0133177 with a V magnitude of 13.75 |

Very nice... Are some pixels blinking there? Did I discovered some new pulsars in your image, or my eyes are really screwed up? hehe
