OPERATIONS RESEARCH
This branch of Maths was born during the second world war; the urgent need of solving tactical and other problems motivated a joint attack of the problems by mathematicians, drawn from various branches of mathematics, and scientists/engineers . This resulted in the development of Linear Programming. Dynamic Programming,Queing Theory and others and went under the collective name: "Operations Research". I used to wonder why this technique was not adopted for tackling FLT. In other words, perhaps the jt. attack of FLC by a group consisting of Number Theorists, algebraists, Geometers, Topologists etc. would have perhaps resulted in the proof; and then I realised the reason why this approach was not adopted: fear of PLAGIARISM. I don't think it was fear of plagiarism, though. FLT is one of those problems that is hard to solve and doesn't give you much in return. |
