Default Amazon Smile

Apparently Amazon had a couple of requests for GIMPS (a.k.a Mersenne Research Inc) to be their Amazon Charity recipient. I've filled out the paperwork to register GIMPS with the Amazon Smile program.

Should anyone be inclined to send GIMPS a few bucks while they shop at Amazon, the link is:

Cool. My shopping at Amazon did increase the last couple of months, what with the lockdown and all. I'll make sure to use this.

I should point out that on a desktop you have to specifically go to smile.amazon.com to checkout, otherwise your order will not qualify. On a mobile device it's automatic once you signed up.

I added Mersenne Research Inc as my Amazon Smile charity about half a year ago. I spent close to 2k since adding (some were not eligible I think and some I forgot to checkout thru smile.amazon website) and so far only generated 3.30 USD, of which 0.00 USD has been received.

It's not much but better than nothing I guess

Geeez, I just ordered one mobo, one cpu, and couple of t-shirts, about that time, for a total of about $1700. Couldn't you say a bit earlier?
(the t-shirts will support Mathologer, hehe, I have seen them first in his video and liked them a lot).

I guess one could put in /etc/hosts on Linux, or some equivalent on Windoze, that means that links www.amazon.com are redirected to smile.amazon.com. Then there would be no need to remember or worry if one clicks a link. I have not tested this though, but I think it would work.

Very nice. I usually get something from Amazon on a monthly basis. I will have to remember this.

I suppose this only works on the .com version of Amazon and not in the EU?

I see it available in the UK, so try prepending 'smile.' to whichever usual link you use for your country.

At least for me in Germany, Smile is available, but Mersenne Research Inc is not in the list of possible donation targets. In fact, I saw no foreign only Incs etc.

I'm able to log in to e.g. amazon.co.uk and amazon.de using same credentials as my usual US account - in fact I used the UK site just last week to order a used copy of an only-released-for-Region-2 special edition DVD unavailable in the US (cost including transatlantic shipping was still surprisingly reasonable, around $10) - but I suppose ordering stuff via smile.amazon.com and having it shipped to yourself out-of-country just to give a little % to MRI kinda defeats the purpose. But if someone wants to pretend they did that by going through the motions at smile.amazon.com right up to the final checkout, then compare the total cost including expensive overseas-shipping to what they would pay for ordering same locally, then paypal MRI the difference, we certainly don't discourage that. :)

I'm in the UK, and donate via smile.amazon.co.uk to an animal charity. I'll be honest, I would rather the money went to the animal charity, so I did not intend changing the charity to GIMPS, but I did look as to whether it is possible. It was not possible to do so, even if I had wanted to.
