Does anyone known the poop on availability of the Intel Quad cores?
In particular, when will they be released and when might they be available
on Laptops? My company runs a 3-yr lease cycle on computers. Mine
is due for renewal at the end of the year. I'm hoping the quad cores will
be available by then.

Quad cores for the desktop are available now. This fall you can expect a 45 nm shrink - a little less power, a little more speed, and a few new SSE instructions. I think you'll also get a faster FSB.

Quad cores for the laptop - I've not seen them on any Intel roadmap.
Intel just refreshed its laptop line with "Santa Rosa". You'll get a faster FSB.

My opinion: there might be reason to hold off on desktop upgrades until Fall. I wouldn't expect any major laptop changes until next Spring.

This way you will never upgrade, because there will always be something "just behind the corner"

Well, yes; on the other hand, to buy a Q6600 quad-core processor for $530 now when there is universal consensus that the price will be $266 from July 23rd onwards seems other than completely wise. The unknowable future is one thing, the well-trailed roadmap another.

You' may have misinterpreted my opinion. I'd delay a desktop quad-core upgrade today if the 45 nm benefits were important to me. I see no good reason to delay a laptop purchase today.

Unfortunately a dual core is the most for 2007.

The best will be the X7900 @ 2.8 Ghz

There is no "true" quad core on the market yet, only chips with 2 duo cores. The first real quad core will be AMD Phenom (codename: Barcelona) :

No way to know. I believe the two chips will have the same theoretical peak FPU throughput. The likely answer is plus or minus 10% times the difference in raw clock speed.

The raw clock speed difference will determine the difference. Intel has not officially announced what clock speeds the 45 nm chips will come in. You can expect them to be just a little bit faster.

There is also a new SSE instruction (ROUND) that could boost prime95's speed a few percent (after some programming).

Yes, but Barcelona/Phenom is based on 65nm. At the end of 2007 Intel should release its Penryn processor, a true quad core based on 45nm technology.
