What 'type of work to get' should I ask for if I want short assignments? My computer can be reassigned at any time, so I do not want to lose it on the last day of an eight month test. What tasks can be completed in hours rather than weeks?
(I have 2 computers, one new quad core and one 7 year old 1.6 MHz). |

Trial Factoring jobs are quick to complete, depending on the exponent and the depth it will take from minutes to hours.

Trial Factoring. On the 1.6GHz you could even do trial factoring to low limits nut it might be overkill - 2-3 minutes per work unit.

I think 1.6GHZ would be plenty fast for regular TF assignments. I've got a 1.1GHZ PIII doing regular TF, and everything except maybe 2^67 to 2^68 takes less than a day to finish.

If you can afford at least 200 MB for at least 2 thirds of the time the machine is on, then consider devoting a core to P-1 factoring. Assignments should take a few days.

Also, TF'ing in the 100M digit range can be short (2-5 minutes) or there are some that are ~1 day each, depending on the bit depth.
