This one for Uncwilly and Batalov.

Quote:
I guess you can say I'm a loner
A cowboy outlaw tough and proud
Well I could have lots of friends if I wanted
But then I wouldn't stand out from the crowd
Some folks say that I'm "egotistical"
Well I don't even know what that means.
I guess it has something to do with the
Way that I fill out my skintight blue jeans.

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble
When you're perfect in every way.
I can't wait to look in the mirror
Cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
O Lord it's hard to be humble
We are doing the best that we can.

It was either Mac Davis or Charles Jennens.
I always mix those two up.

For some reason, this thread reminds me of a short J.London's story.
Quote:
"Have you any regrets, Margaret Henan?" I asked, suddenly and without forethought.

She studied me a moment.

"Aye, thot I no ha' borne another son."

"And you would . . .?" I faltered.

"Aye, thot I would," she answered. "Ut would ha' been hus name."

Dammit Paul. Those lyrics launched a vicious and persistent ear worm, which has tortured me since I saw them.
EDIT: (a few hours later) OK. It remitted and something else took over for a while. Some of the most pernicious one I get are early sixties kid-targeted ad jingles. Sometimes I can derail them by singling something else, even almost sub vocally.

OMFG! I have gotten about half way through that. I picked up on the Scottish speech character at once, though it seems like a rough, back-country, insular coloration.

The story has really gripped me.

Ahh, That story! Thank you very much!

I read it years ago on line, following a link from an on line forum. Bizarre and fascinating.

Strangely, I thought it was being presented as a straight factual account. I have no recollection of its being credited to Jack London when I read it. Since I couldn't remember any of the names, I was dead in the water as far as trying to look it up was concerned.

When I was reading Last Call, the account of the fate that befell Wayne Wheeler's wife and her father brought the story to mind.
