System: Windows XP
I´ve set the priority in prime95 25.9 build1 to 1 but in the task manager it has still normal priority. How can I setup a priority below normal? Last fiddled with by joblack on 2008-12-28 at 06:23 |

The main thread only starts and sgnals the worker threads and handle commnication. This has neglible CPU impact, and to make things go smoothly the main thread should have priority higher than idle. |

You either have to run task manager from the SYSTEM account, or (easier) exit prime95 and reopen it from your account. Then just right click prime95.exe and set priority as desired. (Windows doesn't allow you to set things about processes that don't belong to you. Prime95 starts from the SYSTEM account which...doesn't belong to you)

The Windows programming API has functions to change a thread's priority. Thus, it is the task of a program that creates new threads to set the priority. You can alter the priority using Task Manager (better, get Sysinternals' Process Explorer), but I don't think the adjusted priority is remembered for next time to run the program.
