I'm very happy to report the completion of 12,227+. This one was a bit of a pain. First, it was too large to fit in 3GB of memory, so I had no computer capable of completing it for a few weeks. Then, the linear algebra failed because of a hardware error in the computer on which it was running. Finally, after completion of the LA, the sqrt failed on 7 dependencies before succeeding on two almost simultaneously (there were 4 instances running). It frequently failed because the Newton iteration failed to converge, and it took a long time to decide it wasn't converging.

Unfortunately, I know of no way to determine that the Newton iteration failed, other than to compute the entire square root and then check the size of the coefficients in the answer.

All but one. Out of 7 failures, 6 were due to the Newton iteration failing, and one due to the GCD being 1. So, of 9 total sqrt runs, 6/9 had the Newton iteration fail. I've reordered the lines in the log below so that each run is grouped together. It turns out that even the successful ones took 6.5 to 7 hours for the square root step, so the time was about the same whether it converged or not. In past runs, the multiplication and sqrt root steps have taken about the same amount of time, whereas here the multiplication only took about 2 hours.

That's only the time since the last restart. It took somewhat longer. Due to all the restarts and downtime, though, I'm not sure how much longer.

Looks like a 3x speedup on 8 cores versus 1; the whole job would have taken 291 hours at the speed of the last part of the run or 885 hours at the speed of the first.

This is very much in keeping with other experimental observations. The speedup is approximately proportional to the square root of the number of processing elements.

Yes, it does scale as about the sqrt of the number of cores used until about 8 cores. 12 cores, though, are slower than 8 cores. I haven't tried above that.
