I just came across this. It's a couple of years old, but it shows one, ahh, possibly less wholesome purpose for distributed computing: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/bits/20...ed-gsm-crack/1.
And, according to security researcher Steve Gibson, they are (were?) even using NVIDIA graphics cards to crack the key! http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-213.htm (do a search for 'NVIDIA'). Plus, presumably, top-of-the-line GPUs have only gotten more powerful since then. Read the whole SN transcript. If any of this is true, then it's a good thing I'm a semi-Luddite and only turn on my cell phone for emergencies... Any thoughts? updates? Rodrigo |
