This is probably a windows issue, but anyways let me describe the problem I'm having.
I have installed the latest Ubuntu 7.10.x64 on one of my PCs in a small LAN (3 PCs). The other two computers have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed. One of them sees Samba shares without a problem, the other one however reports "Access is denied" (attached you will find a screenshot). I have disabled windows firewall, Kaspersky Internet Security but still it doesn't work. Additionally I am able to access windows shares on this particular PC from Linux. Any hints on that? ![]() Last fiddled with by Cruelty on 2007-11-09 at 11:31 |

Does the security log on the failing Windows machine give any clues? Are all your machines in the same workgroup or domain? Can you find other points of difference between the two windows machines that may give a clue? Have you tried running an ethernet sniffer (ethereal, perhaps) on your Linux box to see what's going on at the network level? Have you tried increasing the debug level on your smbd? Paul |

WinXP NetBios can be a pain. You can use the "nbtstat" command line tool in XP to check the status of nbt.
I once configured samba as a WINS server to resolve some intermittent problems I had. [global] wins support = yes name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts bcast Then use the samba IP address as the WINS server in DHCP or TCP/IP properties directly. Good Luck. It turned out that the computer name was previously used on a network by another PC. Changing the name to unique one solved the problem
