Some forum members live on islands in the Atlantic (Manhattan is in a river and doesn't count.) Some run on those islands. Others don't unless they are being chased. Or following a beer wagon that has a loose keg.

Some people on some of these islands run for office. I don't know whether this pertains to any Forumites.

I put in a request to have a Blog area, where I plan to dump some language out of my head. Mostly geeky stuff, such as why every programmer should at least know a little bit about Perl. But, also, life stuff in general. Such as, how important physical exercise is -- particularly for people like (most) of us. To put on the table, for the first thirty years of my life I was your typical sedentary computer nerd. If I wasn't asleep I was sitting in front of my workstation. I got up to over 80 kg -- heavy for my height. Then, I discovered the local Hash. Not the drug, but instead "A Drinking Club with a Running Problem! It's a "Hounds and Hares" thing. Each week, a new set of Hares will set a trail somewhere in our beautiful island, and between 60 to 100 Hounds will try to run (or walk) the trail in the fastest time. But the trail is intentionally not obvious -- lots of mis-trails, back-checks, etc. The run/walk lasts for about an hour or two, and then everyone joins back at the start point for drinks (Banks beer here -- yukky. A bit like making love in a canoe -- fscking close to water). There's also a silly ceremony called the "Down Downs", where different Hashers will get punished for various amusing "heinous crimes!". I recommend (after this CV19 thing is over) people see if there's a Hash near them. It's great fun -- lots of very interesting people. And (at least here) you'll find yourself in places you never even knew existed. And, there's something really motivating (particularly for (at least this) nerds) to run behind some /really/ fit women. I actually met my long-term girlfriend on the hash. Oh, also, after only running once a week I dropped down to 65 kg after only a year, and now am at a steady (and healthy) 60. |

So, as previously documented, I'm a member of the Barbados Hash House Harriers. AKA the BH3.
"The Drinking Club with a Running Problem! After shutting down during the CV19 Emergency (the first time the BH3 has not run on its weekly schedule since its founding more than thirty years ago; including immediately after Tropical Storms), we're back Running and Walking (and Socializing) again! Much to my surprise, a few Runs back was my 300th. We're a wonderfully supportive community of like-minded people, so we do everything we can to encourage participation and exercise. Thus, we're given "Celebration Runs" "Down Downs", with a personalized artifact. I received a Laser-etched pen (the nominal for 300). My partner-in-crime was given a tee-shirt (nominal for 100). ![]() P.S. This isn't meant as gloating. Just an empirical data point... P.P.S. Yes, Barbados is a *very* small country. But by simply following the rules -- wearing masks at all times, social distancing, etc -- we haven't had a case of community spread for months. P.P.P.S. I really didn't know this would be happening this run, or else I would have had my hair cut before. Almost long enough to braid! Speaking of Atlantic isles, I spotted this shipping container recently.

![]() Yeah... I don't even notice it anymore, but it really struck me when I first came down here. We Bajans use shipping containers for all kinds of things (not just shipping). Long-term storage; construction site caching. Even homes (I'm serious). Being modular, they're very useful in many different situations. Driving around Barbados it is rare to not have at least one container within line-of-sight. |
