My Athlon 1400 MHz system sounded like the fan was straining a bit, so I decided to rerun the torture test and got the error message:
FATAL ERROR: Reading from temp file I reran it several times, and was always able to complete the 1024K self-test successfully, but always got this error message on the 8K self-test. My question is, since I haven't seen this error message discussed very much in this forum, doesn't this message seem more indicative of an I/O problem than a computation problem (CPU or memory)? One other poster had the same experience of always getting this error on the same self-test, at 40K, even though other self-tests passed successfully. (This was after running 12 or so hours.) One more comment: It might be helpful to have a list of the possible error messages in the stress.txt file, as one is referred to it in case of error, but no specific information is given as to what the errors mean. George also made this post on possible sources of hardware problems awhile back: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showpos...55&postcount=2 It could be useful for some of this info to also be included in the "WHAT TO DO IF A PROBLEM IS FOUND?" section of stress.txt. |

I just replaced the CPU fan, and although the computer is noticeably quieter, I am still getting the same error messages.

Did a file named ptemp get left lying around? If so, delete it.
I assume you have enough free disk space and you have permission to write a save file |

I was running version 23.7.
I'll check for a ptemp file when I get home. But still, the error message said a read error. I recall someone else getting a write error because of a full disk. Thanks for your responses. |

I still suspect a heat related problem, because the torture test usually has to run for around an hour or so before the FATAL ERROR shows up. Before I replaced the fan and cleaned some dust out, it was crashing after only 20 minutes. But I was wondering if this particular message might indicate a problem with something other than CPU malfunction - I'll try running memtest on it tonight and see what happens.

My apologies - I thought I was running 23.7 but when I went home and checked, I discovered that I had not updated the program and I was running version 23.5. I installed 23.7 and now have been running the torture test for over 24 hours without an error. I will also try 23.8, but it looks like my problems have gone away with an updated version.
Thanks again for the suggestions. Phil |
