2x achievable if the hardware executes the key double-precision ops in quad-pumped fashion, i.e. double the FP throughput of the Core2. But I doubt they'd design the new ISA without having exactly that in mind.

Things are reverting more and more to the days of vector supercomputing - just on your PC these days.

In the future I imagine it will get there eventually. But it did take a long time to finally get native 128bits per clock processing from SSE. From, IIRC, 1999 (P3) till 2006 (Core2).
