2015-12-31, 07:20 #1 Ale   Nov 2015 52 Posts x^2 = 2 , is it true? italian Language : Secondo me esiste un numero razionale tale che x^2 = 2 ed è la radice quadrata di 0,2 che è 0,4472135955 , mi spiego meglio 2 e 0,2 rappresentano entrambi due unità , quindi x^2 = 2 è possibile perché chiede 2 unità e non il numero 2 inteso come numero intero , quindi 0,4472135955^2 = 0,2 = che appunto sono 2 unità , cosa ne pensate ? Google translate : I think there is a rational number such that x ^ 2 = 2 and is the square root of 0.2 that is 0.4472135955, I'll explain 2 and 0.2 are both two units, then x ^ 2 = 2 is possible because it requires 2 units and the number 2 is understood as an integer, then 0.4472135955 ^ 2 = 0.2 = 2 units that are in fact, what you think ? you do realize that all this does is cancel the sqrt and square symbols.

Not just Google, but the accursed IEEE and their "floating point formats", aka introducing hidden errors everywhere to slow down technological progress!

Continuing with the good fun, OP banned until he satisfactorily completes the elementary proof of the irrationality of sqrt(2) along the lines which I PMed him (this is still very basic, but different than the 'classical' ancient-Greek-era proof, to ensure he can't just copy/paste an answer.) I cc'ed the other mods on my ban-PM to him containing his un-ban homework assignment. Consider it incentivization to actually learn some basic maths.
