I decided to give Ubuntu 64-bit a try on my Athlon 64 x2. I have MPRIME in a folder. I can't seem to get it started. It must run in a window. I cannot find a way to a command prompt. Any suggestions for this old dumb butt?

Open a terminal (maybe by Ubuntu's search for "terminal") and "cd" (change directory) to the directory. Like this:
Code:
cd ~/mprime Check mprime is executable with "ls" (list file(s)): Code:
ls -l mprime Code:
chmod u+x mprime Code:
./mprime -m This thread has some ways to start mprime on boot Last fiddled with by paulunderwood on 2013-10-18 at 02:39 |

"Open a terminal". I understand what you mean. I can't find a way to do that. Help docs don't mention that specificly. Pretty sorry for a guy that taught MS-DOS. :-|

You can open a Terminal window by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T or going to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.

Got into folder. Entering "mprime" returns "command not found".

I'm not at all a Linux expert, but the "./" (dot-front slash) preceding the program name is necessary. The "-m" starts mprime in menu mode for configuration, if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I had an Ubuntu machine to mess with.

Now running! ./mprime loads the menus. ./mprime -d starts the process. I have much to learn about Linux. I found a complete listing of Bash Terminal commands. I will learn it in small bits. Wiindows 8 x64 was not an option. I have 7 Pro 32-bit on the other partition. If this works, and it is, I won't be searching for 7 x64. Thank you to all who helped. :-)

Glad I found this thread so that I wouldn't have to start from scratch.
I'm trying to compare my laptop's DC performance in Prime95 on Vista x64, to how fast it works with mprime on Zorin OS 6.4 x64. (Zorin is a Ubuntu derivative; I'm using a Live CD but with the mprime archive extracted to a USB thumb drive.) I managed to change the directory to the correct thumb drive. I tried everything in this thread, but when I type "./mprime -m" in the terminal, it comes back with "Permission denied". ![]() What can I try next? Very much (but not 100%) a Linux noob. ![]() Rodrigo |

You need to change the permissions on the file "mprime". In Linux there are 3 permissions of "read", "write" and "execute" for each of "user", "group" and "all". So if you don't have permission, you need to run:
Code:
chmod u+x mprime Code:
sudo chown rodrigo:rodrigo mprime ![]() I am running Slax, usb thumbdrive distro. Simply download, unzip to a formatted thumbdrive, run the program on the thumbdrive to make thumbdrive's master boot record active, and boot it by pressing your motherboard's magic "select drive to boot" key when you power up. (On older computers you might have to go into BIOS and arrange the list of bootable media.) Last fiddled with by paulunderwood on 2013-11-06 at 19:50 |
