It's interesting that the discoverer of the prime hasn't come forward. I'm aware that the GIMPS prize terms say not to disclose any such discoveries under the possible penalty of being disqualified from the prizes, but the limitation is only for 90 days:

Quote:
Discovery Non-Disclosure Period. Participants and Awardees agree to a reasonable immediate period of non-disclosure communications silence, not to exceed 90 days, about any discovery, alleged or verified, until GIMPS announces the discovery to the academia and press. Non-compliance may result in award disqualification.
This gives a couple of possibilities:
 1. The prime was reported between two and three months ago. This would greatly narrow down the list of possible candidates and make sleuthing easier, although it probably isn't the case.
 2. The user was not aware that he or she had discovered a prime. This is a likely scenario; had they known, chances are they would have already contacted George.
 3. The prime was reported more than three months ago, but the finder has agreed not to disclose it until the press release. Also very likely in my opinion. I'm sure most of us would honor such a request from George in this situation.
 4. Plot twist: the discoverer is George himself.

Fun is actually everywhere. For example, re-reading all old threads of sleuthing for Mprev, Mpenult, etc. Don't know about you, but I personally find them fascinating (and the more so the deeper into the forum you dig).

Firstly, one can find a vast array of colorful characters from yesteryears, and secondly, one can find a lot of hidden brainteasers. Think about David's question (never mind his famous S/N ratio, this posting was in the signal corner; the dude had his brighter moments occasionally). Just by analyzing this thread one almost certainly can answer the question "will it make 9 heads in a row?" Hints: figure out what "heads" meant; given that the answer was in fact "yes" to that question posed in 2013, what do you think the answer of today's updated version of the question? and why? For bonus points, give an estimate of "yes"/"no" odds, given the leaked information.

Although I already know the answer, I would say that the odds are pretty close to 50/50 (75829560.91) based on what is publicly known here. One incongruity is exactly which FFT length is the one in question -- there've been some contrary claims on that matter, though the only hard evidence on that matter is in fact correct.

Smile Verification process of "M49"

Just for future reference purposses i post a document here about the verification/cross-checking process of "M49" as it appeared in this thread. Maybe it is good to know for next time which programs were run and how everything went!

I don't know if there is, but when we know the exponent it would be nice to have a document with the result lines from the different runs just for verification.

Having been through this several times, you never know how big the reaction will be. The last prime was a big to-do, I've seen others barely get a reaction. Fingers crossed.
It is quite possible that we'll get more traction if we piggyback on the Skylake connection before that one winds down. Tuesday might be less impactful than today.

Sorry LaurV I should have counted you as well, but when you wrote the following I was not sure how to understand it! I thought it was an expression of pure joy in general over the new prime!

From the discussion above it seems as if the discoverer himself (or herself!) is not aware of the find, maybe not even now. Maybe its because he is doing like me, checks the results on the server and very seldom checks the results.txt-files. It seems as if the prime result appears as "C" on the server even for the discoverer. Is that so? Or does the discoverer see a "P" In his Work Results Details?

The discoverer is aware. The result is hidden from his work results detail.
