We may invest some additional bulletproofing in those.

But then again, all of the CudaLucas, MLucas and Prime95 independent runs (and if we could get a run of Glucas ? *)
could not all be mistaken simultaneously (as well as using different FFT sizes). We will soon know.

As to official announcement, this may take some time. I need to write a press release, Scott needs to approve and gather his list of press contacts. Chris Caldwell needs to have his web site updated. GIMPS main page needs updating. Patience please.

I definitely considered trying to get it working as an excuse to get early access to the exponent, but... not having been updated in years, including dead websites and links, discouraged me.

Well, there's a fun research project for you. Try archive.org, perhaps some other caching services, or try contacting Guillermo. His root web site is alive. :-) Email him, try to build, and so on...

I am sure serveral participants of this forum has the software on their computers somewhere, maybe even me if I can get hold of one when the children are sleeping!

As a participant who pays close attention daily to the progress of my LL testing, if my machine found a new prime would I immediately know? Or is this information disguised somehow and forwarded to George et al?

You would know. There's even a configuration option to make noise if a prime is found.

Which is on by default, isn't it? But I know I have my desktop muted nearly all the time and none of my servers have a speaker (or do they? I can't say I'd hear it in a server room even if so). Not that it matters because I'm pretty sure I disabled that option. Last thing I would want is some hideous beeping or something in a colocated server room. I'd get a phone call from the NOC asking me to shut it off. They walk the floors and if there's something making unusual noises, that's what they do (in case of bad fans on the verge of burnout...it's happened to me before).

I guess when it's finally public knowledge, we can ask the person, end the mystery. I don't actually know the answer.

Hmm... I had someone contact me about what to do if they found a Mersenne prime, and the timing and size are roughly right. What are the odds?
