ok guys i think i'm ready for an upgrade but i need help in determining which one to choose.
my options are: Northwood 3.4ghz Prescott 3.4-3.8ghz Extreme Edition 3.4 ghz now i would like someone to tell me which one would be faster to do Prime on. my guess is that the EE will be the best but i just want more detailed info on why. PS: i might even overclock which ever one i get so please keep that in mind. ![]() |

in many benchs EE 3.4 ties with Prescott 3.6. Northwood's still good, but I would take Prescott 3.6, especially noting that last stepping is good even for air cooled overclocking.

I recommend the northwood over prescott. EE stands for Extreamly Expensive

The choice now seems more confusing for people because of the Prescott 600 series.
The 3.2Ghz Northwood is about the same price as the 3.2Ghz Prescott 640 which has EMT64T. It seems to me that the 500 series Prescotts underperform Northwood per clock for Prime95 and use more electricity. I haven't seen a Prime95 benchmark for a 600 series processor yet though. Maybe Prescott will get back up on par with Northwood per clock. Maybe Prescott will take the lead over Northwood per clock if 64-bit Prime95 or other Prime95 optimizations happen in the future. I would have trouble deciding which processor to buy right now. |

Hehe, my parents are starting to discuss buying me a desktop. Maybe I can wait until they hit 4 GHz, then I'll have a serious number crunching machine for GIMPS.
