The US Senate has voted 95-1 to let Finland and Sweden join NATO.
It is possible that objections from Turkey could still prevent them from joining - member states have to be unanimous in allowing new nations to join, and NATO member Turkey has voiced reservations. As to the Senate vote, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) voted "Present." The only opposing vote was cast by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO). He maintained that China is a greater threat to the US than Russia, and claimed that we can't afford to devote resources to check the aggressive ambitions of both Russia and China. Speaking for myself... By failing to oppose Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, we would be encouraging China in its ambitions as well. China is watching and waiting to see how Russia fares in Ukraine. If Russia is at all successful, China will be emboldened to take over Taiwan by force. We cannot afford not to oppose the hegemonic ambitions of both Russia and China. I am reminded of the words of Thomas Paine who wrote in "The American Crisis," also known as "The Crisis:" These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as Freedom should not be highly rated. More immediately relevant is President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address. It was the height of the Cold War. We viewed the Soviet Union as an existential threat to our nation, the democracies of Western Europe, and to liberty itself. Kennedy said, Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty. This much we pledge - and more. Comes now Josh Hawley: "Gee, it might cost a lot of money." |

Some more mad developments in the aggressive invasion area, as well as in the Russian collective unconscious personified by Mr.Pu (who was expected to give address to the nation but perhaps forgot about it? Old age? he is late by > 2 hours.)

Calling up 300,000 reservists seven months into the "special military operation" was always part of the plan, of course. Everything's going just fine.
Sounds like sham Anschluss referenda will be held in various parts of eastern Ukraine. |
