Angry Pitfall when upgrading to Windows 10 with Fermi vs Kepler/Maxwell

Hello everyone,

I write to you to confirm my investigestions:

Preconditions:
2 NVIDIA cards installed
1: Nvidia GTX Titan - Kepler - GK100 chip
2: Nividia GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores - Fermi - GF100 chip

Problem: After upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 only one of two NVIDIA graphic cards is detected. Device Manager reports error.

Reason (probably):
You cannot mix Fermi and Kepler/Maxwell GPUs on Windows 10:
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answeoddsloters/detail/a_id/3707/

Quote:
Mixed combination of GeForce Fermi + Kepler/Maxwell class GPUs
Depending on which graphics card will POST first:
* WDDM 1.3 mode if Fermi POST first
* WDDM 2.0 mode if Kepler/Maxwell POST first

If combination of graphics cards results in mixed WDDM modes, only graphics cards compatible with first card's WDDM mode will load display driver. Other graphics card(s) with different WDDM mode will fail to load driver.

Can anyone confirm?

Time for a new Maxwell GPU..? R.I.P: my 560 Ti 448. :-(

Not long ago someone posted a funny picture with "unattended laptops will be upgraded to windows 10", most probably you didn't see it

(we can't help with your problem, sorry, we didn't make the decisive step, but we could not stop our finger to reply to it, most probably you have a driver problem which win10 would be able to fix it, eventually install some nvidia tools - is the nv-ctrl-pannel available on 10? - and cut all the links between cards, like disable SLI or so, try newest drivers; sorry I can't be more helpful)

Upgrade to WinXP.

That spying surveillance platform otherwise known as Win10 is not free in any way. You will pay more for it in the long term than any other OS ever.

Wink All good

Ehmm, I'm not directly looking for a solution/help. (But: If you have one, tell us.) As far as I have understood it there is no solution by design and/or Nvidia is not interested in doing something.
I just want to warn you... ;-)

Microsoft apparently doesn't think this is funny ...or even a joke! They do it with a straight face now.

This morning I found that my drive was polluted with a ready-to-install Windows 10 distro. Wasted 5.7Gb of my SD drive (and of my bandwidth, though I don't care much about that) without asking me ever and would have installed it, too, if I didn't pay attention! Bastards.

Went to Windows update and "hid" this wondrous Trojan gift. Will delete the folder later, after research...

Today, I got confirmation from Gainward that my assumption was correct.
Please dont't start a Windows 10 thread but this fantastic piece of software said that my PC was all compatible - after 3 months of "checking"...
By the way, I'm quite happy about that: Time to cut out some dead wood.

I can give the 560 TI a proper "funeral" in one of my linux boxes...

Don't throw the deadwood away - donate it to someone close to you! (close as ...in Germany! EDIT: ... there you go; cross-post)

If you are within 30 days of installation, you can roll back to your previous system, which I highly recommend. I have done it for my partner's father, who found that 10 caused lots of problems.

I suggest shortening the thread title to the more-broadly apt "Pitfall: Windows".
