Our tomcat was positively vetted a couple of weeks ago. He is 9.5 years old and weighed 7.17 kilograms. That is 15.8 pounds avoirdupois, or 35850 carats, or 230.5 troy ounces for those of you who think in those units.

Genghis is a Subsidiarye Coon. His mother is pure-bred Maine Coon and his father a Heinz cat.

I wouldn't be overly reliant on charts. An online search of "how to tell if my cat is overweight" will turn up plenty of hits. Unfortunately, feline obesity is very common.

There are some simple ways to detect obesity - too much padding around the ribs (can't feel them easily) or spine. No "hourglass" waist when seen from above. Stomach area hangs too low or swings side to side when cat is walking (fat pad too large).

I'd say, talk to your vet. One caution: Since owners of obese pets are often unwilling to face the problem, an owner who is willing to deal with it might put your vet into a state of shock.

Another caution: Knowing your cat (or kitten) is overweight is one thing. If it is, getting its weight down while keeping it properly nourished is quite another. That's where a vet's expertise comes in handy.

A bit of digging turned up possible adverse consequences of feline obesity - diabetes being one.

Yup, strongly agree.

We follow the vet's advice and restrict the cat to one daily scoop of the recommended food. The cat visits the neighbours and/or sources his own fresh food (and leaves evidence on our floors). The vet acknowledges that we can't win.

Something that makes me go "Hmmmm..." about these things, is that if the Cerne Abbas Giant had been produced just recently then someone would be up on charges of indecency or pornography or similar, and it would be erased. But if it is "old" then it gets a pass as art or something. Hmmmm... why is that?
