About a year ago I networked the computers in my house and this was my first real experience with networking. Because my DSL modem and provider do not like (allow) a DSL router to be used, I had to turn one computer into a "server" of sorts.

I ended up putting two NICs into one machine, running the cables from the DSL modem to one of the NICs on my server machine, then running a cable (cat5) from the second NIC in the server machine to a "hub" and from there to the single NIC installed in each computer I want added to the network.

WindowsXP has pretty simple and easy (read: newbie friendly) set up for this. It isn't the most hard-core or the most secure way of doing things, but it should get the job done pretty quickly and easily.

Lumly describes it better, but other than problems that were unrelated to networking, I didn't have much trouble setting this up from scratch.

I have found that a LINUX box makes a very stable, reliable, and highly secure router/firewall.

I happen to run 3 net cards in my firewall/router box - 1 10Base-T to talk to the DSL modem, 1 100Base-T to talk to the the gaming and server machines, and a 10Base-2 (coax) to talk to most of the dedicated cruncher boxes (largely older K5, K6, Celeron, and dual Celeron boxes).

I still have BNC T, RG-58 BNC jumper cables, and a few ISA 3c509 cards on hand - I figure the 10Base-2 segment will grow a little more before I break down and buy a 100-Base switch - seems like most motherboards don't believe in ISA any more, and finding PCI cards that do coax is a PITA....

My boxes are all hooked up via 100Mbit twisted pair. They all have static IP's and only my main box has an internet conection( and a crappy dial-up connection at that). I run a little freeware proxy server on the main box and just point all of my other boxes at that.

Super simple, but it works great.

I've got a local offer on some 3c905C-Combos for under $5 each.

I prefer to stick with 3Com, as most of my existing machines run 3c509 or 3c905 varients, which helps keep the kernel size down - the exceptions are mostly Win boxen, though I do have 3 machines with Davicom 9102 onboard-LAN stuff.

I just wish I could *afford* to add a bunch more machines - I'm working on some stuff to help there, though.
