I guess I jumped in the deep end from the start because I've got way too much time on my hands and I've always been fascinated by numbers. I got really bored in sixth grade and memorized pi to 200 decimal places. I still get really bored, almost 40 years later, so here I am. My wife passed away in June so I have a lot of time on my hands and I hope this will be intellectually rewarding.
I just bought a gaming computer to help with my GIMPS works, since the processors on those things are pretty powerful. I'm not a gamer so my computer is going to be doing just that one thing. I hope I can contribute a little piece toward finding the next massive prime number. |

Welcome aboard and sorry for your loss.
I used to take avocadoes for breakfast. Then I found out they induce sleep which gave me CFG. ![]() Goodluck with your prime search. |

Sorry posting in my sleep again. Ment to type CFG (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome).
![]() ETA My point was don't try to memorize Avogadro's constant. Last fiddled with by a1call on 2020-10-20 at 11:25 |

Does your gaming machine have a GPU and if so what kind? (So we can recommend the right software to run on it.
Also, make sure that you are using the latest version of Prime95. v30 available here: https://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=25823 |

Welcome, and condolences. GIMPS can be a helpful distraction at difficult times. (Has for me, repeatedly!)
Contributing effort at any level is welcome. You may find something useful in the new participant thread or other parts of https://mersenneforum.org/showthread...922#post521922 Prime95 v30.3b6 is also the default version for download at https://www.mersenne.org/download/ Gpu software depends on both the hardware and computation type(s) planned; see http://www.mersenneforum.org/showpos...91&postcount=2 Last fiddled with by kriesel on 2020-10-20 at 15:46 |

I've only had the computer a few days and I'm trying to figure out why it turned itself off earlier and I had to reboot it and restart Prime95. I only have Prime95 running on it and nothing else and thought I had the computer set up to not shut off. Speaking of which, how does GIMPS handle a job if our computer shuts itself off for several hours (I just woke up about an hour ago and I'm about to head to work now) and we have to reboot? Do they just put a project's progress on hold if for whatever reason we're offline for a short time? I'm brand new to this and just trying to figure things out. I'm 49 percent complete with the job I'm on at the moment and Prime95 is running again. Last fiddled with by piforbreakfast on 2020-10-21 at 02:41 |

![]() We have a nice place here, and what we do is indeed intellectually rewarding, but to stay here you also need some thick skin ![]() Hope you will find some big primes or factor some interesting numbers. Last fiddled with by LaurV on 2020-10-21 at 02:59 |

So that Intel 109000 is your CPU.
Run GPU-Z if you don't know what GPU you have. If your machine shuts down gracefully, Prime95 will save it's progress and then pick-up when you restart. If it isn't graceful, then Prime95 will pick-up from the last save file. So you might loose an hour or so of work. Make sure Prime95 is set to start at boot. (under "Options") v30.3 is the right version to have. |
