Using multiple PCs

Hi, I'm new and just getting into using this software for finding large primes. Is it possible for me to use my work PC and my home PC to contribute to the same task? Possibly by setting up a private team and then adding each of the computers to it?

Welcome!

You can setup a team, but either way each system works on it's own assignment as individual exponents can't be broken apart for work. You can also use your username of several machines to get the credit and join another team to pool your credits with them.

You can also take a look as several tools that use a GPU to accomplish the work@ gpu72.com and on the forum.

Also make sure your work is okay with you using their resources for the project. :)

I recommend getting explicit permission in writing if you want to use your work PC for GIMPS.

Believe it or not, in some years-ago posts of this forum is the true tale of a guy who actually got investigated by the FBI (confirmed by news reports), and had his personal home PC confiscated (then returned in not quite the same condition), because he started using some computers for GIMPS without first getting permission from the owners of those PCs.

Now, in his case, there were _large_ numbers of PCs involved, but the principle is the same: if you first get explicit permission from the owners in writing, you won't regret not doing so later.

How did it get so bad the FBI got involved? Did someone jump a few stairs or something?

Electricity costs. If you have not big consumers in the factory, as milling machines or cnc, or pcb etching bays (as we have, they consume 99% of the electricity, and few computers running max hot 24/7 are insignificant), like you are some software house, or tax office, and your only consumers are 10-20 computers and 2 servers, then "without/with" P95 running on half of those computers, the electricity bill can jump 5-folds. Then somebody starts investigating, and you either pay few thousand bucks a month, or leave. If no worse.

I used to work for Nokia at the time in the VoIP labs (4th level tech support - used to get to fly the world business class...those really were the days!)

Strangely enough all of the labs machines ran GIMPS software....

In my engineering days, I wasn't aware of any distributed computing projects, but traveling the world is fun.
