Check the Virtual Memory settings the Paging File in particular.
The paging file could be turned off, or set very low. The when a program asks for more memory then exists in hardware the OS can't provide it. My Computer (System) Properties Advanced Performance (Settings) Advanced Virtual memory (Change) The three options -Custom size -System managed -No paging file |

OK machine stripped. No PCI cards, 1HD, installed my 3.4EE proc. Stable for 4 hrs on Blend - still testing.
Voltages: 12V dips/bounces between 11.9v - 11.734v Vcore lowest is 1.552v Will test for 24 hrs. |

Torture test Blend failed after 5 hours. I still have instability. My +12 v bounces between 11.9 - 11.734 and my vcore bounces between 1.534 - 1.6. Is this a power supply on it's last gasp?
I can hear the case fans change pitch (down) when the processor goes under load. That isn't probably a good sign?? I have a Thermaltake 480W. What's a good replacement that will let me run 4 case fans, 6 hdd, 3 pci cards, gt6800 vid, 3.4EE proc??? |

Try to identify you memory's voltage specifications first, so you don't end up frying them. ![]() Prime95 is using 100% of spare capacity of the processor and so draws in more current and will, therefore, generate more heat, resulting in the fans speeding up to try and get rid of the extra heat -- this is normal. The sound I hear is the case fans SLOWING DOWN ever so slightly as soon as the task manager peaks out on CPU usage. This is not heat related... it is load related.

Are you sure that you are not making System Restore points (Xp feature)?

This, coupled with the voltage droops you describe above, has the symptoms of a failing power supply. Your initial findings of a BSOD after installing a power gulping processor could well be the first indication of the power supply going south. An overly taxed supply often does not fully recover; hence your seeing BSOD's with the 2.8G processor. Depending on your graphics cards, a 480W supply could well suffice -- if it really delivers that output. A dual graphics card setup or running a high-end card definitely wants more juice. If you are shopping for a new PSU, check Toms and SilentPC. |
