If there was an entry for "fixed" to go with http://www.dd.pangyre.org/c/cat.html, it might be something along the lines of "deliberately broken, and to add insult to injury, a euphemism applied."
It seems pretty amazing that felines trust another species so much larger than themselves to be anywhere near. Increasingly so, after experience.
Yours appear to be pretty happy with the overall arrangement; feed us, groom us, clean up after us, provide toys, protect us from canines and small feral humans, and we'll allow you to make videos and live in our home.

We call dogs "Man's best friend" for many reasons. Here is another one:

Dog thought to be lost leads New Hampshire police to scene of crash involving owner
Quote:
LEBANON, N.H. - Police are crediting a dog with leading the way to a serious crash on Interstate 89, helping save the lives of two people, including her owner.

At first, police thought 1-year-old Tinsley was a lost dog, but the Shiloh shepherd was on a life-saving mission. She was seen Monday night running on the Veterans Memorial Bridge on I-89 connecting Lebanon to White River Junction, Vermont.

Officers tried to corral her, but she kept running away, leading them to damaged guardrails.
<snip>
Cam Laundry, Tinsley's owner, was behind the wheel of the overturned Ford truck.

"She's my little guardian angel," Laundry said. "It's a miracle that she had that kind of intelligence to do what she did."
<snip>
Laundry said Tinsley has a well-earned reward on the way, most likely in the form of a venison burger for dinner.

ONE burger as reward? How about two a week for life?

The reward is merely to satisfy the owner and other humans that the dog is being rewarded for her loyalty. The dog won't give a rap.

Sure, Tinsley will enjoy her treat (assuming she likes venison), and will know she's getting a treat, but will have no idea what the treat is for. Her reward for bringing help came when she was reunited with her owner.

I'm not a real expert on dogs, but one thing I do know that a lot of people seem not to understand is, dogs are dogs - they are not four-footed human beings. Dogs live very much in the present. A few minutes ago is ancient history. Scolding a dog for something it isn't doing right now or trying to "explain" things or saying "don't do..." as you might to a disobedient child is useless, or worse than useless. Rewarding a dog for something it isn't doing right now is likely to confuse the creature.

I've also seen way too many dogs who are morbidly obese as a result of too many treats.

Are you suggesting that's a bad way to view the Universe?
