Guys, he never claimed he did GNFS. If you look, all his posts say GGNFS. That's what I meant when I said RDS misinterpreted him, I misinterpreted him... it appears some people still are doing so. (To be fair, LaurV misinterpreted RDS right back, which axn pointed out.) Comedy of errors?

Actually, he did. Implicitly. He said he did the C185 cofactor.
This is impossible to do with SNFS.

Ok, I did or I did not, who cares? Say I did. I am sorry. It was not malice, but ignorance. If you (not RDS, I mean you all, the people who knows what they are talking about) say that using yafu with that 185-digit number with this poly here** and sieving with "-siever 14" is SNFS, than so be it. I did SNFS. Mea culpa! It wasn't malice, but ignorance. All happy?

Now, if the thread is split and the title is changed anyhow, LET'S STAY ON THE SUBJECT! Someone may illuminate us about some similarities and differences between the two, like a small table for dummies?

**P.S. For the people who did not get it yet: for the same reason as different members here use the "royal we" or other speech artifices, I have the "bad habit" to use the first person speech with "general" meaning. When I say that I am a genius, I do not necessarily refer to myself... Read all my posts. I notified the title of the thread where the poly is, since the time when the yafu thread was split. I was the one who suggested the yafu subforum, remember? ... And about the "reticence to learn new things", well, here I am guilty too, but everyone of us have different priorities in RL.

STOP POSTING out of ignorance.

Thanks for the advice... Why don't you try to do something to "heal" my ignorance? And then I will get rid of it, and you will get rid of me (as I won't post out of ignorance anymore), so by tranzitivity you will get rid of it and everybody will be happy...

For example if it is too complicate for you to explain the differences between the gnfs and snfs "for dummies", then please start by writing a small tutorial for dummies with the differences between rational sieve and quadratic sieve, why they matter, and if their parents know about it.

Huh? Being nihilist is easier then being constructive, and it is worse then being ignorant...

Here you have a Master thesis entitled "An Introduction to the General Number Field Sieve" where you can start learning about GNFS.
For more detail on the number field sieve (NFS) you can read one of the many introductory papers listed in the readme that comes with the msieve source.

Now get to work!

I can't learn the material for you. And if you weren't so damn lazy, a two
minute search with Google would turn up all the references on NFS that one
might want.

As much as I dislike Bob's habitually condescending tone, I think he's right about you. You really do expect to be spoon-fed.

FWIW, the paper someone linked is pretty derned close to spoon feeding it.

I will be happy to answer any technical questions or resolve a lack
of understanding based on material you have read. But I can't read
it for you.
