Default How much memory?

No matter what I set the memory usage in Prime95 for, it always uses all the available memory on my system. I have 1024 MB, and right now its using 905 MB with it set at 128 MB in the settings...

Any idea on how to stop Prime95 from using so much of the system memory? I am running 23.8 by the way...

Default What Daytime and Nighttime available memory would be safe?

I have a Pentium 4, 2.4GHz with 512 MB of RAM and 75 GB of HD.

Could anyone tell me what daytime and nighttime available memory would be safe?

Thank's!

8mb is fine for both if you are doing double checks...

128MB at night is unlikely to interfere with any other programs you might be running. Is this is a work PC or home PC? Are you running other background jobs?

Prime95 only uses the extra memory about one night a month, so it isn't really a major issue.

This is a home PC, and I only use it to access the Internet and to play some games (rarely).

Thank's for the answers!

No, I am not doing double check.

Even though it is my first test, it is already a LL test.

My box has 512mb ram. How much should I allocate for Prime95? I'm basically wondering what is the least I could have without signficantly detracting from the efficacy of the program.

If you are only interested in Lucas-Lehmer and Double-checking tests, you can stay with canonical 8-16 MB, while if you are interested in P-1 deep factoring, you can add up to 256-384 MB: it will be used by Prime95 only during stage 2 of P-1 (about 12 hours a month) and released otherwise.

I'd encourage you to allow as much ram as you can, at least for part of the day. If there is more ram available, stage 2 of P-1 testing will have a higher chance of finding a factor, and if it does, the very long LL test won't be needed. This makes the project as a whole more efficient.

200M would be OK. I have that allocated to my 256 MB machines, which occasionally do P-1 stage 2 (which is the only place the extra memory is used). I have one box with 128M where I have set the memory to 64M, but I think that is too small. Then I let one of my other machines do the P-1, and move the exponent back when it is done.

But in short: set it as high as you can, without letting it interfere with your other work.
