Meeting other GIMPERs

I met a fellow gimper the other day here in Berkeley. Does anyone else run into each other?

Luke Welsh and I had some beers together a couple weeks ago, on one of his now-infrequent visits to Silicon Valley. There was also a pretty good-sized SiVal-area gathering a couple years back (I think it was to celebrate the discovery of M13466917), and a smaller parallel one in Munich. But we haven't had any similar bashes to celebrate the last few primes - maybe they've been getting found too frequently. Ooh, the thrill is gawnn, bay-bee... ;)

Thanks for the link, Mike - that was just a few weeks after I moved to California in the summer of '99 - for a would-be algorist and programmer like myself, that's a pretty cool "welcome!" My copy of the signed decimal-printout poster (which Scott K. kindly arranged to have framed for us) now proudly hangs in a place of honor on my bedroom wall.

Knuth also showed up for the M13466917 celebration in December 2001 at the Tied House in Mountain View - that time it was at my invitation, delivered guerrilla-style by dropping off a press release with a hand-written "you are invited to join us..." marginal note on his lectern toward the end of his annual "Christmas Tree Lecture" at Stanford - I intended to be more couth and wait until the lecture had finished to hand it to him in person, but I had to get home and the lecture was dragging on and on ... all those smart Stanford CS folks asking perspicacious questions and whatnot.

That digest contains an online link to pictures from that gathering which John Pierce posted on his hogranch.com server - ha ha, I see there's even one of me pointing out some subtle wrinkle in The Force to "Master Yoda" (Knuth), who showed up late in the evening but quickly made up for lost time by devouring a humongous plate of food (he told us he'd been at a Christmas Party where there was no food, or some such tale of woe.) Scott is the studly-looking Venture-Capitalist-looking type in the silk suit - he'd recently moved Entropia.com to San Diego and showed up with several of his top engineers.
