Hey, I am planning to buy a hyperthreading CPU system soon.
The decision to buy a new system is mostly inspired by the speed difference between my good office system and BAD home system in running Prime95. So, I'd like to see the problem being solved soon. Thanks, ...Shu |

shu_the_genius:- there is nothing wrong with buying a machine with hyperthreading to run prime95 on. Just follow the following rules.
1. If you are running windows 2000 or earlier, turn hyperthreading off. (I currently have a P4 2.4Ghz running Windows 2000. I turned hyperthreading off and it works fine.) 2. If you are running anything later than windows 2000, hyperthreading works fine turned on. |

Oh. I get it now. I think you are right. Instead of idle priority letting other apps to run at 100% speed, apps is ran in the 'OTHER' cpu whilst prime95 keeps running. ************************ I thought the conclusion was that other applications become slow due to Prime95. Is that not the case with Win XP? ...Shu |

XP code is written to work with HT (really just one CPU with a quicker ability to switch threads, and able to switch to the other thread on a stall), 2000 works as if it has two physical processors instead of one physical with two logical processors mapped to it.
According to an article I read 2000 has (had ?) an issue running idle code instead of halting the CPU and letting the other thread get full use of the resources. Two physical processors would have double the physical resources, CACHE, FPU, SSE2 etc. |

You shouldn't have any problem. Just install Prime95 and run it. |

I don't use Prime95 ( Im not sure what that even is ) but when I turn on HT for my Win XP system, my system slows down alot and even constantly freezes for a few seconds.
I had to turn HT off. |

I've only seen this happen on my P4 HT system. All my other non HT P4's run at 99%. Is this a confirmed problem with Hyperthreading?

![]() Your computer still works al 98% of its CPU power, anyway, you can disable hyperthreading from BIOS. Luigi |
