Angry Things that should be have been SAID more clearly in read.me, help, or site info

1) When you take "factoring" asigment you can Find the Number is NOT PRIME, but you CANNOT FIND IT IS A PRIME ! ... so YOUR CHANCES OF FINDING PRIME IN THAT CASE ARE ~ = 0.
2) In case 1) can you check the number (you did not manage to prove is not prime) and check it with "LL primality test"? I am not sure - please let someone answer that question.
3) When you take "Double checking" asigment YOUR CHANCES OF FINDING PRIME IN THAT CASE ARE ~ = 0.

Conclusion: YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO FIND PRIME ONLY IF YOU DO "FIRST TIME PRIMALITY TESTS". ... but that is not said very CLEARLY ... I do not think it is a good thing to hide info in such a public project even though if you think it is for a good cause ... MOST OF THE PEOPLE HERE WANT TO FIND A PRIME, but do not even know that with their assignments They DO NOT HAVE A CHANCE!

Did you check this out:
http://www.mersenne.org/works.htm

I quote:
There are three types of work assigned by the server. PII-400 and faster computers get first-time primality tests. These tests require the most work and have the best chance of finding a new Mersenne prime. Pentium-90 and faster computers get double-check assignments. These assignments do not take as long and can find a Mersenne prime only if the original test had a problem. The slowest computers are assigned factoring work. This helps by eliminating some exponents for the faster computers.

Your conclusion is wrong because it is based on an assumption that the original LL test is always correct. If that were true then there would be no point in double checking at all. Double checking could find a prime that the first LL test had missed.

I think "most people here" know more than you suppose.

Red face

When I tested my first number, I'd used an unstably overclocked machine and turned in a result that had 51 suminp!=sumout errors during the test.

That result had a high probability of being incorrect.

When the last prime number had been found, I was crossing my fingers that it wouldn't be a double check on my mishandled number. I would have found it too embarrassing.

I agree. In fact, I think the thread starter is one of the only people who have said something like that.

Some people actually prefer to do only TFs (such as myself) because in our opinions, LLs and DCs take too darn long.

I am even worse than that. I like doing P-1 tests because they only take about 2 hours to do.

I gotta tell you, when I think of P-1, I think of Dave...

Question Dave - how you can choose only P-1 tests ?

Release the exponent when p-1 is finished.

I get them from GP2, in the Marin's Mersenne-aries forum. I just can't wait for the full LL test to complete. I like to come back to my computer each day and find that some tests have been completed. I realise that I will never find a prime, but it is still a good feeling when you find a factor and save someone else from having to do a time consuming LL test.

Wow, someone actually knows who I am. I take it as an honour that one of the moderators knows me and the type of work that I like to do.

Same here, as I do LMH work only. I did doublechecking, p-1 and factoring before.
