I'd like to join the hunt for NPLB and reserve the 554k-555k slot

I've been running Prime95 for over a year almost 24/7 on my Q9550 and want to switch to a different project.

It's the first time I run this program and running the program is still very new to me even after eying this forum for over a year.

I could use a few pointers:

I want to run this on all 4 of my CPU's cores, do I need to manually split up the text file with the input and paste a quarter to every LLR instance or how does this work?

Easiet way:

- make 4 folders with the newest LLR.exe V3.8.2 in (can be found here)
- make a text-file with a quarter of the 1k-range of the sieve-file in it
(be sure every file contains the header "4000000000000:M:1:2:258")
- start each LLR.exe: go to menu "Test" -> "Input Data" and fill in the sieve-file and output-file
- hitting ok will start crunching
- stopping with menu "Test" ->"Stop" only, a save-file will be written and can be started again

- lresults.txt contain all results and if a prime was found, it's written in the output-file given above

Try this first and perhaps read here for another tool.

What does the header signify btw? The one supplied with the range has: "30000000000000:M:1:2:258"

There seem to be a number of help threads in this subforum, but unfortunately none of them seem to be up to date, or very clear.

The header indicates the sieve depth p (here 30*10^12 say candidates with factors lower this boundary were eliminated).

M stands for 'minus' so Riesel side k*2^n-1 (P -> plus -> Sierpinski k*2^n+1)

"1:2:258" see the bottom of the ReadMe.txt with LLR.

Right, very helpful.

I'm now running the LLR on all 4 cores by following your instructions.

554k-555k should be done in about 3 days if they keep popping every 5-6 minutes. :)

I want to confirm that in fact you are reserving 554K-555K. If so, that is OK. I just wanted to make sure that it's not a typo because 553K-554K is still available.

I or one of the other admins will post some more files within the next day or 2.

Yes, I am reserving the 554k-555k range.

I initially used the 2nd range just to test the LLR program and wouldn't run it for a few weeks until Prime95 fully clears it's work. But now seeing how fast the LLR work would be done I thought I might as well finish the range.

After this I'll let Prime95 fully complete it's work and then work on more manual LLR ranges. What work would be most appropriate for my Q9550? (2.83 GHz)

It's your decision you want work on.

NPLB has several ranges:
- 12th drive: n=250k-350k so about 4-6min per test
- manual work at 550k
- 11th drive: n~600k, 10-15min testing
- 6th, 7th drive at ~700k
- 5th drive at 910k
- MiniDrive at 1150k ~25-45min per test

Have a look here, try some candiates manually and decide your type of work.
For all drives you need to install a LLRnet-client to participate.
This also can be done with a non 24/7 internet connection but need some help here.

Actually about 1min at 250k and 2mins at 350k. (Q6600 @ 2.66GHz with the newest LLR)
