I found this factor with mprime 23.9 (stage one on 2^1454+1) and gmp-ecm 6.0.1 (stage two on 2,1454L and 2,1454M).

At the moment it makes number 14 on the list of all time largest factors by ECM, and number 8 for 2005. It is my personal best by ECM :-)

Congratulations. A P55 with ECM is still a very good find.

To which the answer is "yes".

That answer is not quite as facetious as it sounds. Here is just one reason.

Which GNFS polynomial would you use? In particular, how much time are you prepared to spend searching for it?

The rules of thumb indicate that each algorithm would take a comparable amount of computation. This, presumably, is why Bob asked the question.

1000 curves at B1=11M, B2=35133391030, polynomial Dickson(12) on 2,1382M. Adds .22322 to p45 and .02971 to p50.

I did 102 curves B1=11000000, B2=25577181640, polynomial Dickson(12) for 2,1378M.
Adds .02222 to p45 and .00295 to p50.

2400 curves at B1=11M on 2,1382M, adds .53573 to p45 and .07132 to p50, and P-1 with B1=1e10,B2=1e14.
4320 curves at B1=11M on 2,1402L, adds .9643 to p45 and .12837 to p50, and P-1 with B1=1e10,B2=1e14.

For 2,1402L, 300 curves @B1=11M and 1500 curves @B1=43M with GMP-ECM 6.0.1, no factor found. Could someone tell me how these newfangled probability sums work?
