Hoffa had tried to get the restriction lifted, but was unsuccessful.

He was legally declared dead ("death in absentia" or presumed dead without direct evidence of death) on July 30, 1982 - 7 years after his disappearance.

When I lived in the Detroit area, the Red Fox Restaurant in Bloomfield Township - the last place he was seen by anybody willing to talk about it - was still in operation. Somebody pointed it out to me as the place where Jimmy Hoffa had disappeared.
I lived in Michigan at that time and everybody used to joke that his body was dumped in one of the giant concrete posts that supported an I-475 overpass which was under construction. I-475 was jokingly dubbed the Jimmy Hoffa highway.

How much would an embedded human body decrease the strength of a concrete post? And what would happen to such a body in the concrete, with basically no air going out or in? Is it possible the gases released after time could make a little boom?

It would make more sense to place the body before the concrete was poured, when there were no witnesses around. There was a variation of this idea in an episode of Columbo (Blueprint for Murder, first aired 9 February 1972).

When I was a kid, three houses in a row across the alley were bought by a developer and demolished. The site sat undeveloped for years. "The empty lot" became a playground for all the kids in the neighborhood. One attraction was what had been the concrete stairs up to the front porch of one of the houses. The whole staircase was a single piece of concrete. If it had been a solid block, it would have been too heavy to move. But it had been turned on its side after the demolition, revealing that it was hollow. The hollow was big enough for a couple of kids to sit in. Thus was born "Fort Block." The underside of the casting was very rough and gravelly. And embedded in it was - not a body, but an empty beer can! Somebody had tossed it into the form before the pour.

In a letter from Pierre de Fermat to Marin Mersenne dated August 10, 1638, Fermat asserted that he had an analytical method with the help of which he could answer all questions about dividers, except for the decision whether a number is prime or not.

Default The comedy of errors...

Today is Columbus Day, a Federal holiday here in the US. Since 1971, the Federal holiday has been on the second Monday in October. This year, it's October 11. It can be anywhere from October 8 to October 14.

Before that, the national holiday was October 12, the anniversary date of a sailor on the Pinta sighting land in the New World. Congress passed a joint resolution in 1934, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a proclamation in 1937.

Before that, the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus reaching the New World was celebrated on October 21, 1892 by Joint Resolution of Congress and a proclamation by President Benjamin Harrison. One of those advising him was a self-described "Christian socialist" minister named Francis Bellamy, who wanted to promote patriotism, and wrote the Pledge of Allegiance for the occasion. The words "under God" were not in it. They were inserted later, during the Cold War.

Before that was a mass lynching of 11 Italian immigrants in March 1891, following the unsuccessful prosecution of nine of them for the December 1890 murder of New Orleans police chief David Hennessy. The New Orleans case is described here. President Harrison was seeking re-election, and was trying to mend fences with the Kingdom of Italy (and ethnic Italian voters in the US) in the wake of this atrocity. This is described here. (Harrison was however not re-elected.)

Before that was Washington Irving's fanciful A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, published in 1828. It is the origin of a lot of the mythology about Columbus and his voyage. It has the false idea that his contemporaries thought the earth was flat. They didn't. They did think - correctly - that the earth is much larger than Columbus thought it is.

The purpose of Columbus's expedition was to find a route to the "spice islands" - also called the East Indies - which was not controlled by the Moslems. When he landed in the "New World," he thought he'd reached the East Indies. And so it came to pass, that aboriginal Americans came to be called, and are to this day still called "Indians."

And in many states in the US it's no longer called Columbus day. For instance in California it is indigenous People's day.

Like monuments to CSA generals, this is a celebration of someone who did not achieve their goal.
