I may have some extra hardware located in Sydney (Australia), I'm considering donating it based on GIMPS participation. Is somebody [else] from the forum living in Sydney?
Now that I think of it, it may be useful to have a sort of physical map of GIMPS participants (at city granularity) which would allow to set up e.g. "Prime beer night" like once per month, now that the COVID vaccine is on the horizon. Maybe a section on the forum, with a thread per city, and the beer-master posting the time/place in the city-thread. Would enable hardware-swap :) Last fiddled with by preda on 2020-12-06 at 23:00 |

Chiang Mai, Thailand.
There is beer in the fridge and the floor is large enough to sleep. Everybody is welcomed, but be aware that you need to quarantine for two weeks, unless you are local (already in Thai), for which you will pay a ridiculous amount of money. ![]() Hopefully, people will come to their senses soon... (joking apart, if you are around, call/PM me some days in advance) Last fiddled with by LaurV on 2020-12-07 at 04:41 |

I am local, or relatively so to a few forumites. I prefer not to openly post my area. And even though I don't drink EtOH, I am willing to meet at a get together.

There are ~5000 active GIMPS participants (in the past year), or 1 in ~1,548,000 humans.
The participants are potentially scattered among the 196 nations of the world. In the US alone, there are 317 cities over 100,000 population, among the 50 states and 3000 counties & DC. About 44% of the world population is rural. Most whether rural or not live on the 149 million sq km of land area that is 29% of the earth's surface (not on the water or in orbit). Worst case for gathering, equally spaced, the participants would be about 200km apart. Some cities may contain 1 participant or less, even rather large cities, and some participants may reside in no city. I've only met one participant in person (Dave Willmore), decades ago. I don't currently live in the city where we met. Last fiddled with by kriesel on 2020-12-07 at 20:31 |

As I remember, Nucleon is from there too, but living somewhere in the dessert with his solar-powered GPU farm...
![]() You don't travel much, do you? In this forgotten corner of the world, I have already met in real life few active forum members, who dared, and had the opportunity and the guts to visit me. I tell you, they don't bite. Their bark is worse, only. |

This may not be the best time of year to come to my part of Canada ... but our Summers are among the best; warm days; cool evenings and 16 hours of Sunshine; but so much to see that 16 hours is not nearly enough!!!!

I agree with Wayne. Northern hemisphere winters are not the best time of the year to visit his neck-of-the-woods.
On the other hand, winter is an excellent time of the year to visit Barbados... It gets cold enough that people from "away" don't feel /too/ warm. It's currently 24 degrees (C); tomorrow during the day it's expected to get up to 28... ![]() |

Here we have now (which will not change till mid-to-end of January, more or less) 16°C in the morning and ~28°C at noon, no rains, and reasonable clean air (below 50 or 100 AQI). Then, it gets visible hotter day by day, and the pollution becomes unbearable, culminating with 45°C at noon and 250 to 300 (or more, due to agricultural burning mostly) AQI in April (unarguably the hottest and arguably the driest period of the year). Then it starts raining and cooling again, from May, June, till October.
Any hardware donation in Barbados? Or at least some Pascas? ![]() Last fiddled with by LaurV on 2020-12-08 at 06:39 |
