Default Prime95 grabs new work even though it is not finished

One of my servers, configured to take the work that makes sense, grabs new work even though it is not finished with whatever it is doing (TF work at the moment).
The worktodo.txt looks like this (instead of ellipses there is actual data):

[Worker #1]
Factor=…
Factor=…

[Worker #2]
Factor=…
Factor=…

[Worker #3]
Factor=…

[Worker #4]
Factor=…

I was wondering if this is correct behavior, or if I have something misconfigured.
Why is it doing that, what is the point? Is that meant for computers that go off-line for long periods of time?

That is correct behavior. It is only meant so that when one piece of work is finished, you don't have to wait for the server to assign new work, so that no CPU time is wasted. In the file prime.txt is a line "DaysOfWork=" . By default it is 5; that means that if Prime95 thinks the current work will be done in 5 days, it will reserve more work from PrimeNet. You can change this parameter as you like to store more or less work. (I believe the minimum is 1, and any less than that typically wouldn't make sense because your computer only talks to PrimeNet once each day anyways.) Keep in mind that if DaysOfWork is set to 1 and your internet goes down for a few days but the computer is still running, then it will run out of work. But in the end it's still entirely the user's choice.

Cool, thanks.

I just wanted to make sure I am not stepping on anybody’s toes by grabbing all work for myself. LOL

Take a look at the numbers of available assignments on the right-hand side of the "Exponent Status Distribution" table on page http://mersenne.org/primenet/

There are millions of TF assignments available.

Dubslow et al...

Do you not find it a bit strange that this "new" user knows all the local slang?

I wouldn't call any of that "local" slang, in the sense that it is only used here. Certainly we use it a lot, but calling it "work" and "stepping on toes" are certainly in no way local.

My sarcasm detector broke yesterday and is still in for repairs. If I took your post too literally... well, where can I get a new one?

Someone with a quad core doing TF work is really what makes me sad about this whole thing

He did say "for now", so hopefully he'll see the errors of his ways

There is a subtle difference, in my opinion, between sarcasm and objective observation.

Even when I do manage to detect sarcasm, my usual response is to respond as if it wasn't anyways. Bad habit.

Wow, tough crowd. Since I am new, I have assignments set to give me work that makes sense.

Why would not work that makes sense make sense? LOL. If it does not not make sense, then change the algorithm for what makes sense. I think Prime95 is being pretty smart there. Even though it is a Xeon E5620 machine, it probably detects that it is already under a lot of load. That server is not just sitting idle doing nothing.

Between six computers, I currently have six D assignments, eight LL, and six TF.
