John was a terrific friend.

I knew that he was in a nursing home, but I had not heard
that he was ill.

You worked with him for your Ph.D?

Whether that you were interested in computational number theory before you did your Ph.D,
or that you just simply wanted to get with a Ph.D, because of the fact that it was much easier to get up with from that subject?

What was your Ph.D topic anyway (better PM me if in case that you want to keep up with that matter rather secret), was it in some other different area, and then after that it was the case that you forgot about it and then that started up to work upon computational number theory?

My condolences. I did not understand that meaning of
RIP = "rest in peace" at the time that I first read this thread.
Simply, I just thought that a wikipedia article had been created
for him.

Then, thus you may mind moving my posts within this thread
elsewhere within this forum.

That edit was reverted, and in fact by a quick google search there is no article about it.

I had the pleasure of meeting John at several West Coast Number Theory Conferences ... great guy, a lot of fun to be around, never short of an amusing anecdote. I'm sure I speak for many people in the field when I say he shall be greatly missed.

I note that John went out of his way to help procure a modest but very timely grant from the Number Theory Foundation in early 1999 which helped JasonP, Richard Crandall and me to buy some Pentium machines which helped us finish the all-integer "wavefront" double-checking of our floating-point computation establishing the compositeness of F24. I recall John was very excited when I approached him (we had not met previously) at a WCNTC in late 1998 and told him the primality test of that number was underway and would finish the following year. (Of course not without some further adventures, which are described in the eventual paper.)

RIP, John - and thanks.

Some robot (even if this was a living person that served as a robot) also decided to be pedantic about that as well. NIU should have written something, but they also didn't. This is sad.

Hmm, I have my doubts. I just did a search on Google News and could find no mention of John Selfridge passing away. Also, the part about his death has been removed from the Wikipedia. :\

frmky quoted an announcement from Sam Wagstaff in his email to me; I'll post it when more details become public, unless he's sure there's no harm in doing so now.
