Which is the greatest mathematician of all times? (in breath and in single accomplishment ) and why?
Did I miss anyone that I should have included? Alphabetized

The guy or gal that invented zero. An ancestor of theirs probably invented the wheel too.
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi..Appollonius of Perga, Diophantus.. “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” ~ Arthur Conan Doyle, The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes. Looking at the premise of the initial listing, the movie "The Usual Suspects (1995)" comes to mind. Last fiddled with by jwaltos on 2022-01-22 at 04:18 |

The unsung inventor(s) of the abacus and quipu [... If this conjecture is correct, quipus are the only known example of a complex language recorded in a 3-D system.(Src.: Wiki)]

Pythagoras sorts after Poincare in the Romanized alphabeticisation of his name.
I'd add Ed Witten, the only physicist to have won a Fields Medal. |

The time span of ~2600 years makes comparisons difficult.
If a Pythagoras equivalent was born in this era could (s)he make any contribution today? Also Ramanujan and Galois died far too early IMO. I'm sure there could have been a lot more from them. Why does isacc not get a capital I? |

Joseph-Louis Lagrange, Emmy Noether and John von Neumann are notable omissions so far.
I'm not sure what Hypatia has done to deserve her place on this list. I hope she wasn't added solely for female representation (in which case, why not Noether?) |
