Default Countdown to proving M(6972593) is #38 down to less than 10!

Hey, I was just looking at the Hourly World Test Status, Assignments Report, and it looks like the countdown to proving M(6972593) is #38 is down to 7! I think this must have happened yesterday. Way to go, GIMPS!

They're being poached. Don't be surprised if that last one is done in much less than 18 days, and not by the person to whom it is assigned. Then again, the poacher may leave that one alone as it is moving along well enough on its own.

As is being discussed in another thread, I sure hope we can prevent poaching soon. Poaching BAD

Guess everyone is scared to poach the final exponent left:
6715589

Says 10 days to go, hopefully that computer is running 24/7 and will finish in 10 days.

Would you all be terribly disappointed if that user proves M(6972593) is the thirty-ninth prime instead of the thirty-eighth? :)

That would be cool, and the chances of that are still better than winning the lottery :D :D

I'd be mildly annoyed, as it would make my upcomming 10,000,000 Prime find worth $5000 less.

Looking at the assignments list and cleared exponents lists on PrimeNet, it may be true that we have finally conclusively proven that Mersenne #38 is in fact the 38th Mersenne Prime. If so, congratulations to all in getting this goal :) Next stop, hopefully finding another Mersenne prime :)

Indeed, the last double-check arrived this afternoon or evening.

Congratulations all - especially the relentless double-checkers in the group!
