4.5 quake overnight in the east SF bay — We had a good shaking on the opposite side of the bay, I was in bed watching late-night TV, thought it was my upstairs neighbor falling out of bed - because I think he did when the quake hit. When I got up this morning there were (and still are, but less so) dozens of little ants scurrying all over my desktop next to an exterior wall and the windowsill just above it. At first I was unsure whether that was due to the quake or the anomalous warm-up we had overnight (high jumped from 60F yesterday to 70 today) due to being sandwiched between a pair of rainy fronts off the Pacific. But we’ve had plenty of near-70 days this winter (4th-driest december on record), so I’m guessing it must be quake-related.

"We felt a big shake and my grandmother thought it was a heron landing on the roof," Tom told the BBC.
Serious damage reported.

Damage reported in Pinotepa Nacional and Tututepec but no casualties
Mexico News Daily | Friday, February 16, 2018

There are reports of damage but no casualties in Oaxaca after a strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck at 5:39pm CT with an epicenter near the city of Pinotepa Nacional.

The quake was felt as far away as Mexico City, setting off seismic alarms and sending citizens rushing into the streets.

It was followed by a second quake at 6:36, which the National Seismological Service said in a preliminary report measured 5.9.

Had one of a bit smaller size recently. Was sitting on the most solid seat in the house (the one that is bolted to the floor and made of stone).

This headline, Earthquake rattles Southern California; no injuries reported reminds me of the famous and probably apocryphal "Fog in The Channel, Continent cut off".

Any SoCal residents wish to comment? Ernst?

I'm in NoCal (20 mi N of GG Bridge), and was outside at my town's July 4th parade, didn't feel a thing. It would take a very large SoCal quake or a rupture along a long section of north-south-running fault complex to be felt here. OTOH, one can very clearly see the San Andreas fault running NNW a few miles west of my locale (Novato) on a map:

I'm about 150km south of epicenter; I heard it as a rattle, then felt a bump or two. The sort of motion that leaves no doubt it's a quake, but isn't otherwise startling. No items shifted in the house, far from that level of motion here.

The epicenter is way out in the Mojave desert, very few people nearby.

This quake may have had something to do with the one you mention.

There was some recent activity leading from Yellowstone down toward the area of today's quake.

I happen to be in the area and have experienced other quakes of smaller and larger sizes over the years, often closer. This one did not have the initial jolt where I was (within 5km of Caltech) at the time. It was a real back and forth roller.
