Ha! If it would be just 1.3 lunar distances closer, see you talking with respect about it!

No, a UFO named WTF is not threatening to destroy Earth
Quote:
The object is quite small, at most a couple of meters in diameter, and a significant fraction if not all of it can be expected to completely burn up in the atmosphere," said Tim Flohrer, from ESA's Space Debris Office in Darmstadt, Germany.

Whatever remains of the space junk after the fiery reentry is expected to fall into the Indian Ocean, about 60 miles off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, on Nov. 13.

...

Marco Micheli, an astronomer at ESA's Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre, said, "The first goal will be to better understand the reentry of satellites and debris from highly eccentric orbits."

"Second, it provides an ideal opportunity to test our readiness for any possible future atmospheric entry events involving an asteroid, since the components of this scenario, from discovery to impact, are all very similar."

Harwood explained that watching WT1190F could help scientists understand "what exactly happens when something comes into the atmosphere at extremely high speed and breaks apart: Where in the altitude does the break up start? How much debris reaches the surface?"

He also thinks it would be particularly interesting if scientists could identify the object, which could potentially be a piece of equipment left over from the Apollo missions.

I saw a nice Taurid meteor last night - they occur every year about this time, but we seem to be encountering a particularly rich part of the stream this year which is producing many fireballs. The peak is broad, so this entire week should be good. The rate is low (peak rate around midnight at 10-15 an hour) but if you see even one fireball, it is worth it. The one I saw was about 8:30 pm.

Here is a link to an article about the Taurid meteor shower predicting a good year in 2015:

Here is a link to a report on the fireball (as bright as the full moon!) seen in Poland on Halloween:

Indian authorities investigate 'killing of man by meteorite'
Quote:
The chief minister left local officials struggling to explain the mystery blast at the engineering college that left a small crater and broke windows.

The bus driver was standing on a patch of grass near the college cafeteria when he was killed, and two gardeners and a student were injured, officials said. A dark blue stone resembling a diamond was found at the scene.

Government officials at first suspected the blast was caused by explosives accidentally left after building work. However, investigations found no evidence of these at the site.

“When no evidence of explosive material was found, we moved to the theory that it might be a meteorite,” said a district official who asked not be named. “It is not confirmed yet as samples need to be analysed.”

A team from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics was expected to visit the site on Tuesday to collect samples.

But this article makes the situation clear. We have an "either/or" situation, meaning that it is unclear from current observations whether the distance will be about 17.000 km or about 14.000.000 km. Now that makes more sense.
