Our economy is based on competition. It would be good for everyone (except perhaps Intel stockholders) if AMD was once again competitive.

Think this thread belongs in the Hardware section of the forum ;).
Integer performance looks very promising, but their FPU implementation and lack of quad channel memory in the high core parts will limit their use for those computational bound cases (Prime95, GMP-ECM, etc.). |

Better or equal to Intel on just about everything, except stuff using AVX2. Intel is already lowering prices.

We're just over a day from finding out where it really fits, but I don't think there's any significant evidence to show it is better than Intel in an IPC perspective. They're in part relying on offering more cores for less $£€. Similarly, haven't seen Intel pricing move either. There was one badly written article which was shared around the net claiming big price drops from Intel, but they were comparing current pricing vs MSRP which no one ever paid anyway. I've yet to see any evidence of Intel street pricing budging at all.
Still, I have everything on hand for my Ryzen system apart from the mobo and CPU. Both are ordered online so it will be interesting to see if they can ship today to arrive tomorrow, or if they can only ship from tomorrow, assuming they have enough stock to ship on time at all... |

I ordered all my Zen parts except the CPU and mobo online. And everything except the video card should be arriving by Friday. I'm picking up the CPU and mobo at the store on Thursday, though I don't expect to be able to build until Friday night. And I'll just borrow a video card from one of my older builds.
Zen won't be beating my 5960X at running code. But I hope my compile-times will go down and that most other apps will be faster. The Haswell-E has a problem where Windows bounces threads around the cores faster than the chip can turbo up a core. So single-threaded apps are usually 50% slower unless I bind them to a core or disable speed-step to force the CPU to stay clocked at 4 GHz. p.s. My real motivation for Zen is to play with the new architecture and to free up my 5960X for other purposes. |

Had a change of plan already. My CPU pre-order is now listed as unavailable, so presumably they're heavily over-ordered and I didn't make the cut. The mobo status is unknown, but suffice to say it doesn't look like it is in stock.
I found an alternate supplier listing a lower end mobo, and the 1700 in stock so have ordered from there for delivery tomorrow. Will see how that goes... |
