Default Alcubierre configuration produced accidentally.

Some DARPA-funded people were experimenting with the Casimir effect, where vacuum point energy becomes detectable.

They accidentally produced a negative energy configuration which closely matches that required to create Alcubierre warp drive which, in principle, allows for FTL travel.

Very very early days yet but I think this result is quite significant if it can be reproduced and, especially so, if it can be scaled up. More detail at

Telescope time on Mauna Kea may be running out...
Quote:
HONOLULU (AP) - A working group tasked by the state Legislature to come up with recommendations for a new management plan for Hawaii's tallest peak and its affiliated telescopes released the first draft of its proposal Friday.
<snip>
The group recommended that the university not have a seat on the board of the new governing body. The university's lease expires in 2033.
<snip>
The group recommended the eventual decommissioning of the telescopes that sit atop the mountain and to have those areas restored to their natural state. The group emphasized cultural and environmental restoration of the mountain.

It also said the new management team should develop a framework that limits the development of new observatories on the summit.

Entanglement between superconducting qubits and a tardigrade
"The animal is then observed to return to its active form after 420 hours at sub 10 mK temperatures and pressure of 6×10−6 mbar, setting a new record for the conditions that a complex form of life can survive."

"The affirmation likely puts Abdin’s case to bed at this point, but it also reaffirms that tardigrades, wherever they show up in sci-fi (or real life!) are pretty rad little creatures."

https://www.pnas.org/content/118/52/e2110889118 is, to my mind, a rather interesting paper.

The chemical composition of Venus' atmosphere has long been puzzling, not least because there is far too much O_2 in it. This paper suggests that ammonia could play an important role. How the ammonia gets there is in itself interesting as the only plausible source of nitrogen is N_2 and all plausible notrogen->ammonia reactions are strongly endothermic. Here on Earth significant amounts of N2 are made biologically.
