On the https://www.mersenne.org : GIMPS site there is a menu item "More Information / Help". In the page "The Maths", residue and shift are explained in the paragraph "Double-Checking" but benefits from the reading of the previous paragraph "Lucas-Lehmer Primality Testing" for better understanding.
