Speaking of modern formats, JpegXL has been finalised and may be standard at some point before the heat death of the universe. Can't wait to dance on PNG's grave TBH, and it kicks the stuffing out of jpeg when it comes to lossy too.

But, I as the user can choose to d/l the file. Often I don't want the rando file littering my drive. Open a picture in a window is common. Don't need to d/l it and open it in a photo program. Most pdf's don't need to be opened in the native app for me to decide if I want to d/l it.

/SOME/ browsers may not render PDF (et al) correctly. I would argue that in such cases this is the problem of the browser's user. Perhaps they should try looking into their MIME type mappings. Or, perhaps using a different browser. Or a different OS, etc. Mike (read: the MF server) is handing out a binary stream with a header describing the content type which should be used to interpret the binary. I would argue asking this simple function to be wrapped into some HTML5 hack is not a reasonable ask. |

I only allow my browser to render plain text and still images.
Other stuff like pdf, zip, mp3, mp4, etc. must be downloaded, then opened in a native app with limited privileges and without network access. And, for me, it makes no difference if a site specifies to open links in a new tab, or the same tab. I make all links open in the same tab for left click, and a new tab for middle click. That way I get to choose where it gets put. I found many sites to be annoying with random new tabs for everything or nothing, based upon their whim or laziness. So I fixed it for me. Things like JS and external fonts are not permitted. That breaks a few sites, but too bad, I don't feel any need to jump through hoops or make special settings just to load random sites that think that looking pretty is the most important aspect. I make interactive 3D PDF’s. No browser that I know can render them correctly. You can only interact with them as intended/designed in Adobe programs. No network access is required. Most sites linking to them instruct you to right-click and download. But with HTML5 as mentioned before you can force the browser to do so automatically, and that, as far as I am concerned is the correct functionality.

Also... Do you know of /any/ Linux-based software that can render your documents? If not, your outputs are of no interest to me before even knowing the subject domain. |

FTR:
HTML <a> download Attribute https://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_a_download.asp BTW, it's not just the 3D-PDF's that do not render properly in Browsers, but rather any PDF's with JavaScript (which has nothing to do with regular JavaScript and you can not turn on/off). I often encounter "You need Adobe reader to view this ..." in Government and some Financial-Institution sites. IIANM Adobe has a Linux version which is as dysfunctional as the browsers. ![]() |
