Different kind of expiration glitch?

The server code expires old assignments when it is run. Since it doesn't run continuously then expirations are not done continuously. My guess is it runs once per day, and perhaps at other random times when the admin decides to run it manually.

Just be patient and wait for the server to get around to expiring the assignment, then the exponent will be free again and you can choose it for yourself.

This is definitely quirky. Normally the expiry is stepped down until it hits 0, which is the expiry day, and this normally happens at around 23:20 UCT. After spending the next 24 hours at zero, the server would normally release the exponent for re-assignment, however just occasionally this doesn't happen and the expiry gets stepped down to -1, but usually it is then released on the next expiry run 24 hrs later. That's what has happened with this one, and it's currently still available for re-assignment (at 00:02 UCT on 22nd Jan). Why this happens I haven't a clue, but I've seen it happen on previous occasions. Probably George is the only one who can explain it!
