This is probably a very stupid question... but why is there invariably always factoring results being turned in for small exponents (20M-50M) to low bit levels?

Are these people just testing their computers for errors?

If there are small factors in this sort of range, it's usually TJAOI, and they're all for exponents that had a known factor beforehand.

EDIT: Thread on TJAOI and the factoring

I didn't even see his/her name.

I did see:
cow_tipping
For Research
Nesowa (exponents below 10M)

and some others--

I assume these are similar cases to the link you provided.

Not really, For Research is a GPU72 account and it has some DCTF results in that range I'd assume, below 10M is likely from ECM.

EDIT: Looking at the recent results, cow_tipping is doing DCTF work on GPU272, likewise with For Research.
Ignore what I previously said about Nesowa. Nesowa is doing work to 2^64 on a GPU, as well as doing some P-1. Likely someone who wants to see more composites with known factors, even if they are already known composites.

Ahhh. Okay. Thank you for clearing that up for me! My world (temporarily) makes sense again.
